Speaking English Through Games: 6th Grade

This week, 6th Grade practised future plans using going to through oral games.

The pupils spoke, listened, moved around the classroom and worked with their classmates. The aim was to use English in a fun and meaningful way.

Running Dictation

First, we played Running Dictation.

The pupils worked in pairs or groups of three. We used picture cards with different actions and activities.

One pupil stood up, looked at a card and created a sentence using going to. Then, they went back to their partner and dictated the sentence. The partner had to listen carefully and write it correctly. After that, they changed roles.

We played several rounds. In some rounds, they practised affirmative sentences, such as: I’m going to play football.

In other rounds, they practised negative sentences, such as: I’m not going to take a torch.

This activity helped them practise speaking, listening, writing and spelling at the same time.

Fixemos varias roldas para practicar frases afirmativas e negativas, traballando a expresión oral, a comprensión oral, a escritura e a ortografía.

Back and Forth

We also played Back and Forth. In this game, pupils had to create sentences quickly using going to.

We started with an easier version to practise affirmative sentences. Then, we played a more challenging version with two dice. One die gave them a number and the other die told them the type of sentence: affirmative, negative or question.

This game helped them think quickly and use the structure with more confidence.

Tamén xogamos a Back and Forth, un xogo rápido para crear frases con going to.

Why These Activities?

  • These speaking games help pupils use English in a natural way.
  • They repeat useful structures many times, but they do it through movement, play and cooperation.
  • They also practise listening, taking turns, helping their partners and speaking with more confidence.
  • The pupils were active, motivated and very involved in the activities.

Estes xogos orais axudan ao alumnado a usar o inglés dun xeito máis natural, repetindo estruturas a través do movemento, o xogo e a cooperación.
