3º ciclo, Christmas, OUR PROJECTS, Surveys

C͆H͆R͆I͆S͆T͆M͆A͆S͆ S͆U͆R͆V͆E͆Y͆

Surveys are one of my favourite activities. And my students probably think the same. They really enjoy them!

They can be used for just about any level as a warm-up activity, to have interesting conversations about the topic we are learning or a way to collect information for writing about our partners. They are ideal because they can cover the 4 skills in a single activity. Students not only have to listen and speak, but also students have to take notes on answers or write their own questions.

We use them once a week in our classes, for a huge variety of topics: sports, hobbies, subjects, routines, food, Tv series,… As Christmas was around the corner, we decided that this would be the topic of our survey.

Preparation

Before the class I spoke to the school staff and arranged for my class to survey the different primary classes and the staff. I tell the teachers that we were going to do a survey on Christmas and arranged a time to go into their classes.

Moreover, we read a text about surveys and methods to collect information and instruments to represent the data. We learnt lot of interesting things.

Procedure

I told my own class we were going to do a class survey at school. Firstly, we had to think of the topic, the method and the instrument for our survey. We brainstormed topics on the blackboard .Once there was a list of topics on the blackboard, we voted and chose “Favourite part of Christmas”.

Then, I asked them the Christmas survey question “What’s your favourite part of Chirstmas?” and wrote their answers on the blackboard and thought of other possible answers. They selected six of the options for our survey.

Finally, they sort themselves into pairs and chose a class for doing the survey. Besides, they decided that it would be important to have any kind of visual aid(pictograms) for the youngest classes.

Rationale

Before doing the survey, I did the following things:

  • Give out the survey worksheet
  • Read through the survey and check pronunciation.
  • Ask the class to prepare themselves for the survey.
  • Go to the other classes and carry out the survey

After the survey, each pair drew a pie chart based on their results and wrote a brief report. Finally, we collected all the reports in a book. That was a good way to bring the activity to a close.

3º ciclo, Endangered animals brief project, What do you know about animals?

Endangered animals first presentations

Today. two children from Level 6 showed us what they had found out about their favourite endangered animals. They prepared a Powerpoint presentation to illustrate their oral presentation. Congratulations…Good job!!!

At first, they were afraid of not doing a good job, but little by little, they gained confidence and, finally, they  enjoyed the activity. As always, this type of activity also allowed us to check, learn and improve.

We are looking foward to enjoying the other classmates’ presentations.

Estamos desexando ver as seguintes presentacións.

3º ciclo, Endangered animals brief project, My favourite animal, What do you know about animals?

Endangered animals

Do you know that there are many endangered animals all over the world? What’s that?

animation2

Endangered animals are animals in danger of extinction. An animal is considered endangered  when there are very few of them alive.

In the history of our planet lots of cretaures have disappeared, such as dinosaurs. During the age of dinosaurs, only 1 species became extinct, but, nowadays, the problem is much more worrisome because the number of endangered animals is closer to 40,000 species per year.

Most of the extinctions are caused by people, due to indiscriminated hunting or  environmental destruction. If you want to know more about the different causes of animals extinction, click on the picture. 2016-01-17_1302

The more we know about this problem, the more we can do to save the endangered animals.

And if you want to know more about the reasons these animals are in danger, here you have a fun and easy way to learn more about them.

Why don’t we prepare an illustrated endangered animals encyclopedia? I’m sure that it will be an amazing activity. So that, take a look at this website and choose your favourite endangered animal. Take notes on the most relevant information such as, name, adult size and weigth, habitat, food, the reasons why it is in danger of extinction…..Click on the link below and start working!!!!!!!

2º ciclo, Weather Forecast

The Crazy Weather Forecast

The Crazy Weather Forecast is the tittle of a short proyect developed during March by my students in level 3.

Do you watch the news? And the weather forecast? These both questions were the beginning of a short proyect related to the weather. During the first week, children had to watch different weather forecast in order to learn as much as they could about this type of programmes.

Then, they had to write the programme script in groups of three deciding which places they are going to talk about and the weather for “today” . It was a good opportunity to see where we live , where other members of our  families live or even, where other Provinces of Spain are situated.

The Crazy Weather Forecast é o título dun pequeno proxecto levado a cabo polos alumnos de 3º.

2º ciclo, The Animal Kingdom Project 2014

Animal Kingdom Project 2014: Animal Body Parts

There are many kind of animals.Do you know these animals?captura-de-pantalla-24

Do they eat the same food? Do they live in the same place?  Does a lion look like a dolphin? Have they got the same parts of the body?

What do they have in common?

Take a look at this video!

Yes, they all are mammals.Mammals have got babies and they give milk to their babies. They all have hair or fur and teeth.

Mammals are everywhere.  Polar bears live in very cold areas.  Camels live in hot areas. Bats live in caves and fly in the air.  Dolphins live in the oceans. This is why their bodies are different.

Today you are going to work in small groups. Choose one mammal and label the parts of its body. Then, describe it.

You can use the dictionaries!!!!

If you want to know more about mammals and other animal classes , click on the picture.

2º ciclo, The Animal Kingdom Project 2014

Animal ABC videos 1

As you know, students in level 4 are working on a project about animals.
DSC_0334We decided to find out how many animals we were able to  remember. We realised that we remembered lots of them. Then, as we are reviewing the alphabet, each child created one animal abc. They used some books and watched videos to complete their alphabets. We discovered some strange animals like uakaris or xantus!
Descubrimos algúns animais moi raros como os uakaris!pizap.com13951721315191Finally, we worked in small groups in order to create new animal alphabets. In this case, they had to agree how to choose the animals for the alphabets. Some groups only included their favourite animals. Other groups decided to include some strange animals they didn’t know.

Here you have the first one.
