Good books about animals, Jungle animls

Walking Through the Jungle

Do you want to be an explorer? Let’s walk through the jungle. What animals can you see? What can you hear? Walk and creep and wade… but be careful who you might find out there!

Walking Through a Jungle a story by Julie Lacome, is one of my students’ favourite book about animals. It is a lovely repetitive story which develops children’s listening and language skills, followed by an initial sounds phonics game with jungle animals. Furthermore, it is also a great book to learn about animals and actions in a catchy way.

Here you have some videos to work with it.

WHO’S THERE ON HALLOWEN? by Pamela Conn Beall

Who’s There On Halloween? encourages readers to play along and use the clues to name the holiday characters hidden inside.

And this is our Halloween challenge during this week.

Each day, students will have to read a Halloween riddle and try to find out the Halloween character following the clues. We have a scary table with all the items they need to get the activity.

The witch’s cauldron is already full of answers!!!! Will they have guessed the first riddle?

O desafío desta semana ten que ver co libro WHO’S THERE ON HALLOWEEN?. Conseguirán descifrar a nosa primeira adiviña?

We’re going on a leaf hunt

It’s time to say “bye-bye summer” and “hi autumn”. The days are shorter and the nights are cooler, but leaves are turning yellow, red, brown and orange, filling the forest with wonderful colours. It’s time to welcome this new season into our classroom and take the opportunity autumn gives us to plan a leaf hunt.

But before starting our new adventure, we chose one of the most popular books for younger kids with a catchy song and fun illustrations perfect to pair with this activity is We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger.

GOOD BOOKS TO READ

May I Please Have a Cookie?

May I please have a cookie? by Jennifer E. Morris is a funny book that helps the littlest learn how to say the magic words. With Alfie and his mum, children will learn that the best way to get something is to say ,,,,,,PLEASE!

I like this book because it serves as a platform to teach the importance of manners. There are only 3 key magic phrases that children should learn – “Please”, “May I” and “Thank you”.After reading this story, it is important to go into discussion about the importance of manners.

Moreover, this level 1 reader is made up of few words and simple sentences and illustration are so funny and cute that helps students follow the story.

Here you have the first Literature Based Activity developed in kindergarten.

feelings, Good Books for the first day of school, INFANTIL/PRESCHOOL, The Colour Monster

The Colour Monster Goes to School

Every new school year we start school with a suitcase full of books and stories especially selected for enjoying and learning at the same time.

Our first book was The Colour Monster Goes to School, a perfect story for the first day of school because everybody ever felt like The Colour Monster does….excited and nervous when he arrives , wondering what school will be like.

O noso primeiro libro titúlase The Colour Monster Goes to School, unha historia perfecta para os primeiros días de cole.

It’s perfect to introduce the vocabulary related to school objects and facilities, colours, actions, …

After reading the story, my preschoolers created different signs for our classroom and other facilities at school. They were really thrilled with the idea of giving the other teacher their signs. And so were teachers!!!

This activity also allowed us to connect, for the first time, sounds and letters in English through facial gestures and body movements.

This year, we are participating in a Etwinning project with other European schools called You feel, I feel. So, it was a good opportunity for us to work with emotions (HAPPY, SAD, NERVOUS) and discover when and why we feel as we do. And …Do you know? We all are happy to be at school again!!!!

Este ano estamos participando nun proxecto Etwinning con outros colexios europeos chamado You feel, I feel. Asi que, foi unha boa oportunidade para traballar as emocións e descubrir cando e por que me sinto como me sinto. E sabedes? Estamos felices de estar no cole de novo!!!!!

Go Away, Big Green Monster activities

“Go Away, Big Green Monster” is the second book I have chosen this year to be read and teach in preschool.

I really love this book. First of all, because it´s a great chance to have some Interactive Reading, let the children shout out each order: “Go Away Ears”, “Go Away Mouth”… every time something disappears.

Go Away Ears”, “Go Away Mouth”.

On the other hand, it’s a great way to teach or review basic vocabulary (body parts)and adjectives (colours, size)because it gives the children a chance to interact with words in a meaningful way. After working with this book, children will be able to remember and use these words later on in day-to-day situations.

After reading this book, the story can be reenacted by the following follow up activities and, as the same time, the vocabulary and expressions can be worked in a fun way.

“The Secret Name”, an idea from Heidi Songs, is our first kindergarten project this year.  It’s a quick and fun project that is just perfect for the beginning of the school year, and there is almost no prep at all! You only have to write your kid’s name on a white cardstock using  a white  watercolor crayon resist (Crayola brand)and then, let your children paint once the white cardstock with liquid water colours(from Discount School Supply). Their names show up. It’s MAGIC!

Press Here , one of the three interactive picture books from Hervé Tullet, is a must have for Kindergarten classes because let children’s imagination run wild using only the most basic instruments .

Press Here is a wonderfull opportunity to have a low-tech interactive reading experience with your children and it provides the chance for working with numbers, colours, shapes, sizes as well as stimulate  children’s attencion and develop logical and reasoning skills.

Great book, I’d recommend it!

Press Here version

This book is an amazing source of inspiration for English lessons. I developed some different activities during last term and, even I made my own version in order to introduce the number 1 and reinforce colours and sizes in my 3-year-olds class.
