In our 1st Grade English lessons, we learn through play and fun experiences. Recently, we have been doing a hands-on oral activity with a magnetic fishing game, which helps children learn English in an engaging and natural way.

Materials
- Magnetic fishing game cards
- Animal picture cards
- Animal word cards
Materiais
- Tarxetas de pesca magnética
- Tarxetas con imaxes de animais
- Tarxetas co nome dos animais
How the activity worked
- Listen and fish!
During the activity, the teacher names an animal , and the children “fish” the correct cards using the magnetic fishing game. This helps improve listening skills and early reading, allowing students to link sounds, images, and words. This method uses active and multisensory learning, which enhances attention, memory, and understanding in young children.

2.What have you got?
Once they catch their animal, the children discuss it using a simple phrase: “I’ve got a dog”. This helps them practise oral expression in context, focusing on communication instead of memorisation. Learning through real use is crucial in communicative language teaching, especially in early primary education.
3.Have you got a …?
To finish, children talk to their classmates by asking questions like Have you got a cat?”. This step encourages oral interaction, taking turns, and listening, while building social and communication skills. Working with peers is important, as it boosts confidence and learning together.
This activity is very complete and helps reinforce and consolidate everything we have been working on in class during the last few weeks. By moving, playing, and speaking, children learn English in a way that is natural, motivating, and appropriate for their age.
