Last month, we worked on the story The Mitten in our Preschool English classroom. The children loved the animals and the idea of a tiny mitten getting bigger and bigger!
Some of our activities were inspired by ideas from MY ESL WORLD 123, and others were our own creations. We adapted several materials to fit our version of the story, because we added a new character: the frog! The children were very excited to see the frog jump into the mitten.
Este mes traballamos o conto The Mitten na aula de Inglés de Infantil. Combinamos actividades inspiradas en MY ESL WORLD 123 con propostas propias, adaptando a historia e engadindo un novo personaxe: a ra.
Here is a short summary of the activities we did:
Animals Clip Cards
Children looked at the animal silhouette, said the animal’s name, and clipped the correct picture with a clothespin. It was a great way to practice vocabulary and fine motor skills.

Retell the Story Glove
We assembled a big mitten and placed the animals inside. Using popsicle-stick characters, the children retold the story together.

Story Order Mitten
Students placed small animal pictures on the mitten in the correct order. They used numbers to help them remember the sequence.

Story Order Puzzle
Children matched the animals to number cards in the correct story order. This helped them understand what happens first, next, and last.
Spin the Wheel and Tell the Story
In two teams, students spun a wheel and added animals to a mitten mat. Each time, they retold the story. The first team to collect all the animals won the game!

Swap the Animals
The children “hunted” flies with animal pictures while listening carefully to the teacher. When they heard an animal name, they had to catch the correct fly. This activity helped them improve listening skills in a fun and active way.

Jumping Frog Race
In two teams, children “jumped” the frog across animal pictures on the floor. When they landed on an animal, they said its name. The first team to reach the other side won the race.

The Mitten Crown (Final Product)
For our final activity, students colored, cut, and glued the animals in order to make their own Mitten Crown. They were very proud to wear it!

Realizamos xogos manipulativos e dinámicos como tarxetas con pinzas, ordenar a historia, reconstruíla cunha manopla, xogos en equipo con ruleta, carreiras da ra e unha actividade de escoita cazando “moscas” con animais. Como produto final, elaboraron unha coroa coa secuencia do conto.
Why These Activities Are Important
These hands-on and TPR activities helped our students practice speaking and animal vocabulary in a natural way. They improved listening and story comprehension, learned to sequence events, and developed fine motor skills.
Working in teams also encouraged cooperation, motivation, and confidence. Most importantly, the children had fun while learning English!
Estas actividades prácticas e con movemento favoreceron a expresión oral, a comprensión, a secuenciación, a motricidade fina, a cooperación e a motivación do alumnado, aprendendo inglés dun xeito lúdico e significativo.
