Welcome, Mr Autumn!

This month we started our Autumn unit with a very special visitor… Mr Autumn!
He arrived in our classroom to help us learn new colours, words and songs about Autumn.

Discovering Autumn with Arcimboldo

We looked at the painting “Autumn” by Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
We talked about what we could see in the picture: eyes, hair, nose, leaves, fruits…

During this activity, the children answered sometimes in their mother tongue and sometimes in English.
This was completely fine, because the goal was to introduce the topic, awaken curiosity and help them discover autumn elements.
Some children were already able to say a few words in English!

I also asked simple questions such as:
“What are his eyes?”, “What is his hair?”, “What is his nose?”

“What are his eyes?”, “What is his hair?”, “What is his nose?”

Story Time: “Brown Bear… What Do You See in Autumn?”

We read our special Autumn version of Brown Bear, What Do You See?
The story included words like leaves, autumn colours, apple, chestnuts, scarecrow, turkey and pumpkin.

The children joined the story by:

  • making a gesture for each word, or
  • standing up and saying the word if they had the matching picture.

Lemos unha versión adaptada ao outono de Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Let’s Play and Learn!

TPR Game – “I can see…”

I said “I can see…” and the children ran to find the correct flashcard in the classroom.
A fun way to learn by moving!

Cando eu dicía “I can see…” e os rapaces buscaban a flashcard correcta pola aula.

Pass the Basket – Singing and Playing

We played Pass the Basket with our fun autumn rhyme:

“Pass the basket round and round,
autumn leaves are falling down.
Listen to the turkey sing gobble-gobble-goo… STOP!”

When the rhyme stopped, one child took a picture and said if it was in the story or not in the story.

Xogamos a Pass the Basket cunha divertida rima de outono.

Autumn Song

We learned “Autumn leaves are falling down” to practise the colours yellow, orange, red and brown.
We sang and moved like falling leaves.

Aprendemos “Autumn leaves are falling down” para reforzar as cores yellow, orange, red e brown. Cantamos e movémonos como follas caendo.

Final Activity – “I Spy… Autumn Leaves”

We worked in mixed-age groups (3, 4 and 5 years).
Each group received a code card with four different leaf shapes, each one with a different colour.

The children looked for these leaves and coloured them on a giant class poster, practising:

  • listening in English
  • colour and shape recognition
  • following a code
  • teamwork

A Lovely Autumn Adventure

The children enjoyed discovering Autumn in English through art, stories, songs and games.
Mr Autumn helped us learn many new words… and have lots of fun!
