Learning to Read with Emotions and Family

Today, our 1st grade students took part in a very fun and dynamic reading activity. The goal was to help them read simple phrases in English using family and feelings vocabulary.

The children worked in pairs. Each pair received a picture of a family. First, they looked carefully at the image and talked about how each person felt: happy, sad, angry, hungry, scared or bored. After identifying the feelings, they had to move around the classroom to find the English phrase that matched each family member.

They were very motivated and enjoyed this first contact with reading in English. It was a great way to learn while having fun!

Why is this activity important?

  • It helps children start reading in English with short, clear sentences.
  • They connect words to real emotions, making reading more meaningful.
  • Working in pairs helps students learn from each other. One child may know a feeling word, and the other may be good at reading — so they support and help each other.
  • It also builds their confidence, as they read and speak in a safe, playful environment.

This kind of activity is perfect for early readers. It combines speaking, listening, observation, reading and movement, all in one!

  • Tamén aumenta a súa autoconfianza, ao falar e ler nun ambiente seguro e lúdico.

Este tipo de actividades son ideais para os primeiros lectores. Combinan expresión oral, escoita, observación, lectura e movemento, ¡todo nunha mesma experiencia!
