Speak & Spell: The Menu Mission


We Created a Magic Menu in English! A Fun and Creative Speaking Project in Year 6

Over the past few weeks, our Year 6 students have completed a magical mission full of creativity ,teamwork and English practice.


🪄 The Mission Story

Something strange happened in the Great Hall at Hogwarts: the tables were empty! There was no food, no plates, and no cups… and the house-elves had disappeared!
Professor Dumbledore asked the students to help: their mission was to create a magic menu to bring food and magic back to Hogwarts.


🎯 Mission Objective

The main goal was to improve speaking and writing skills in English, by presenting a creative menu using vocabulary and grammar related to food, descriptions, and opinions.


🎨 Final Product

Each student designed and presented their own magic menu poster, which included:

  • Creative and imaginative dishes.
  • Personal opinions using “I think it’s…” and descriptive adjectives.
  • Vocabulary and grammar structures like “There is / There are” and “Some / Any.”

Nas últimas semanas, o alumnado de 6.º de primaria completou unha misión chea de maxia, creatividade e aprendizaxe significativa en inglés.


🪄 A historia da misión

Algo estraño pasou no Gran Comedor de Hogwarts: ¡as mesas estaban baleiras! Non había comida, pratos nin cuncas… e os elfos domésticos desapareceran.
O director Dumbledore pediu axuda ao alumnado: a súa misión era crear un menú máxico para devolver o sabor e a maxia a Hogwarts.


🎯 Obxectivo da misión

O obxectivo principal era mellorar a expresión oral en inglés, presentando un menú creativo empregando vocabulario e estruturas gramaticais relacionadas coa comida, as descricións e as opinións.


🎨 Produto final

Cada alumno/a deseñou e presentou o seu propio cartel dun menú máxico, que incluía:

  • Pratos imaxinativos e orixinais.
  • Opinións persoais coa estrutura “I think it’s…” e adxectivos variados.
  • Vocabulario temático e estruturas como “There is / There are” e “Some / Any”.

🪜 Steps of the Mission

  1. Planning
    Students thought of magical dishes (starter, main course, dessert, and drink), named them creatively, and wrote down ideas.
  2. Writing the draft
    They wrote their dish descriptions using the correct grammar and vocabulary.
  3. Designing the menu poster
    They created the final version with drawings, colours, titles, and well-written descriptions in English.
  4. Oral presentation
    Each student presented their menu to the class, practising pronunciation, expression, and speaking clearly and confidently.
  5. Self-assessment
    After the presentation, they completed a short reflection to evaluate their own work and effort.

🪜 Etapas da misión

  1. Planificación
    Pensaron nos pratos máxicos (entrante, prato principal, sobremesa e bebida), puxéronlles nomes creativos e anotaron as ideas.
  2. Escrita do borrador
    Redactaron as súas descricións empregando o vocabulario e a gramática traballados en clase.
  3. Deseño do cartel do menú
    Fixeron a versión final con debuxos, cores e descricións en inglés, coidando o contido e a presentación.
  4. Presentación oral
    Cada alumno/a presentou o seu menú diante da clase, traballando a entoación, a pronunciación, a expresividade e a seguridade.
  5. Autoavaliación
    Ao rematar, reflexionaron sobre o seu traballo cunha autoavaliación sinxela.
