Learning Math and Colours with Pete the Cat

In our preschool classroom, learning English is fun and interactive! We used Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons to practice subtraction and colours through hands-on activities.

Usamos Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons para practicar a resta e as cores a través de actividades manipulativas.

Activity 1: How Many Buttons Are Left?

This activity helped children understand subtraction while reinforcing English numbers.

Materials:

  • Individual worksheet with Pete the Cat.
  • Buttons of different colors.
  • Dry-erase markers.
  • Playdough.
  • Spinners for minuend and subtrahend.

Steps:

  1. Storytime: We read Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, repeating “Oh no! Pete lost a button! How many buttons are left?”
  2. Hands-on Practice: Children spun both spinners to create their own subtraction problems. They placed the corresponding number of buttons on Pete’s image and removed them as they solved the problem, reinforcing the subtraction concept visually and kinesthetically.
  3. Counting and Writing: They answered, “How many buttons are left?” and wrote the number on their worksheet.
  4. Playdough Numbers: Children made numbers with playdough to show the subtraction result.

Materiais:

  • Ficha individual con Pete the Cat.
  • Botóns de diferentes cores.
  • Rotuladores de borrado en seco.
  • Plastilina.
  • Ruletas para o minuendo e o sustraendo.

Pasos:

  1. Hora do conto: Lemos Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, repetindo “Oh no! Pete lost a button! How many buttons are left?” para reforzar a estrutura.
  2. Práctica manipulativa: Os nenos xiraban as dúas ruletas para crear as súas propias operacións de resta.
  3. Contar e escribir: Respondían “How many buttons are left?” e escribían o número na súa ficha.

Activity 2: Who’s Got the (…) Button?

This game helped children learn colours in an engaging way.

Materials:

  • A large jar.
  • Buttons of different colours.
  • A colour spinner.

Steps:

  1. Color Practice: We said colours in a fun way to help children remember them.
  2. Spin and Ask: A child spun the colour spinner, and we asked, “Who’s got the (colour) button?”
  3. Find and Say: The child with the matching button showed it and said the colour out loud.

Actividade 2: Quen Ten o Botón (…) ?
