Learning Family Vocabulary Through Fun Games!

This month, our first-grade students have been learning vocabulary related to family and practicing how to introduce their families in English using the phrase “This is my…” Through interactive games like Bingo, Puzzles, and Guess Who I Am?, they’ve been exploring new words and building confidence in their speaking and writing skills. Here’s a peek into our fun activities!

Este mes, os rapaces e rapazas de primeiro estiveron aprendendo o vocabulario da familia en inglés, practicando como presentar aos seus familiares usando a frase “This is my…” Para facelo máis entretido e efectivo, utilizamos varios xogos interactivos, como Bingo, Quebracabezas e Guess Who I Am? Estas actividades axudáronlles a fortalecer as súas habilidades de expresión oral e escrita nun ambiente de aprendizaxe dinámica e colaborativa.

Bingo: Recognizing and Naming Family Members

We started with Family Bingo, where each student was given a Bingo card featuring different family members (e.g., mum, dad, brother, sister, grandparents) and colours. As family member names or colours were called out, students had to match them on their cards and shout “Bingo!” when they completed a row. This game not only reinforced vocabulary but also helped them quickly recognize words and improve their listening skills.

Empezamos cun Bingo da Familia, onde cada estudante recibía unha tarxeta con distintos membros da familia, como mum, dade, brother, e sister e as cores en inglés. A medida que se mencionaban os nomes ou as cores, os estudantes debían identificar os membros ou cores nas súas tarxetas e marcar a súa posición. O obxectivo era completar unha liña para gritar “Bingo!” Este xogo foi unha excelente forma de aprender vocabulario novo, mellorar a memoria visual e practicar a identificación de palabras en inglés.

Puzzles: Putting Together Family Connections

Next, we introduced Family Puzzles. In this activity, students worked to assemble puzzles that, when completed, displayed family members with their names. This game allowed students to practice saying phrases like “This is dad” and “This is sister”

Logo, traballamos para armar Quebracabezas da Familia. Cada crebacabezas mostraba a diferentes membros da familia e os seus nomes en inglés. Mentres armaban os quebracabezas, os estudantes practicaban frases como “This is dad” e “This is sister”.

Guess Who I Am?: A Fun Way to Describe Family Members

Finally, the students enjoyed a guessing game called Guess Who I Am?.

How to Play

One Student as the Guesser: One student is chosen to be the “Guesser,” while the others are the “Family Describers.”

Making a Guess: The Guesser begins by describing a family member using “This is…”

Class Responses with Yes or No Signs: Each of the other students listens to the description and responds with a “Yes” or “No” sign, which they hold up. If they think they know who the described family member is, they say, “Yes!” If they think it doesn’t match the family member, they hold up the “No” sign.

Un dos rapaces ou rapazas será o que adiviñe e o resto será os que terán que dar pistas.Para iso, comezará a intentar adiviñar empregando a expresión “This is…” O resto dos compañeiros e compañeiras daranlle pistas empregando sinais de Yes/No.

Benefits of Learning Through Games

Using games to learn English brings many advantages for young learners:

  • Improves Memory: Repeating words in different games helps reinforce vocabulary, making it easier to remember.
  • Builds Confidence: Games create a low-stress environment where students feel comfortable practicing new words and phrases.
  • Encourages Teamwork: Working in pairs or groups allows students to support each other, fostering social skills along with language learning.
  • Enhances Speaking and Listening Skills: The games require students to listen carefully, understand instructions, and express themselves in English.

Our students have enjoyed these activities, and we’ve seen fantastic progress in their vocabulary and confidence. We’re excited to keep learning and having fun with English together!
