Napkin butterfly artcraft

We are really excited because spring is here. Warm and sunny days, colours everywhere, animals waking up, insects flying around, trees turning green and flowers growing make us feel really happy. So, we decided to celebrate this new season with this cute butterfly artcraft. You only need some everyday craft supplies like paper napkins, felt-tips and pippe cleaners for the body. Glue on a couple of googly eyes, and you’re done!

And , let your children’s imagination flies!!!

For younger kids, this is a great way to practice fine motor skills, as well as learning about the seasons and simply having fun with hands-on activities.

Miss Spring stayhome activities

Over the last two weeks I have received many of the proposals designed for kindergarten students to go through this forced confinement in the most enjoyable way possible. I just want to say that each and every one of the activities I received far exceeded my expectations, and I have no choice but to deeply thank the involvement of the families despite these hard times.

Here you have a summary of these activities.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The sun and the cloud

Here you have the last activity of our Spring Project. As Spring is a good season to learn about weather, we use the story “The sun and the cloud” to learn why a rainbow appears in the sky. In adittion, this story ( Robby Rabbit 2-Macmillan) allows us to work in this issue in a fun way. Students read the story, watched the video, learnt some songs related to weather and chose one of the different roles of the tale in order to act out the story. We didn’t have enough time to rehearse the play all we wanted but we hope you enjoy it.

I can see a rainbow too!!

Sin nombre

Spring is the perfect time of year to teach children about the rainbow.

So last Monday, Miss Spring came to our classroom and  told us that a long time ago, people thought rainbows were magical bridges across the sky full of colors  and she began a discussion by asking us a few questions to get us thinking:Have you ever seen a rainbow in the sky? What was the weather like when you saw a rainbow in the sky? Was it raining? Finally, Silvia explained us how a rainbow appears in the sky. Then Miss Spring read us a story called “The sun and the cloud”and taught us a short and fun song that will help us recognize the colors of the rainbow.

Do you want to sing along with us?

I can sing a rainbow” song written by Arthur Hamilton 1955. This video is intended for educational use.

I Can Sing A Rainbow Lyrics:
Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue
I can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow too.

Listen with your eyes,
Listen with your eyes,
and sing everything you see,
Now you can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing along with me.

Butterfly life cycle wheels

butterfly-lifecycle5-294x300Butterfly life cycle wheels  provide a wonderful visual demonstration to help kids explain how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. All you’ll need is a white paper plate, a coloring sheet  of the butterfly life cycle, crayons, glue and scissors. After teaching my children about the 4 different stages in the butterfly’s life cycle, they colored all of the stages. Then I let them cut around each picture, and glue them on to the paper plate themselve.

I found numerous examples of this activity surfing on the Internet and here you have our version.

Butterfly life cycle

caterpillar-chrysalis-adultMany insects like butterflies have four separate stages of life cycle, each completely different from others. Mummy butterfly lays eggs on  green leaves. After a few days, a small caterpillar comes out of the egg. This caterpillar is very hungry and feeds voraciously, growing quickly in size. Once the caterpillar is big enough, it stops eating and enters the transformation stage. It builts a cocoon around itself and, two weeks later, a butterfly emerges from its cocoon. This adult butterfly lays eggs  and the life cycle  starts again.

pizap.com13697784130831Eric Carle’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is a great excuse for learning about  the cycle life of a butterfly.

Here you have some videos to learn how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly.

Parts of plants: a task in Kindergarten

As you know, this year we stopped using text books  in Kindergarten  and  focused on working with  projects. We decided to start with something that children already know such as seasons and use English to understand the world around us. This term is the time to work with the spring and everything  that  draws their  attention of this season. Starting from  a story where the main character, Miss Spring, shows us all that we can observe in spring such as insects, flowers or a  rainbow, we  decided to create in small groups a poster about parts of plants as the  first  task. First of all, children  investigated a little based on what they knew, observed plant to find parts, worked on reading and writing with the digital board and eventually developed a poster with the title PARTS OF A PLANT. Each child had the opportunity to discover and use their skills and, above all, discover and take advantage of other’s capabilities. Decisionmaking, consensus and task distribution were other aspects that fostered this kind of activity. Finally, children made an individual sheet which gave them the opportunity  to meditate on what they had learned from this task. Here you have their work!
